Friends Of Griffiths Island, 03 5568 2682, Non-Profit Organization, Port Fairy

The Friends Of Griffiths Island was created by volunteers, divided into 4 to manage priorities on Griffiths Island including Animals and Birds, Access to the Island, History and Heritage and Plants.

Griffiths Island is a natural oasis almost in the heart of Port Fairy. The island supports a numer of native animals including a small mob of swamp wallabies. It is also the site of one of Australia's most accessible breeding colonies of short tailed shearwaters (locally known as Mutton Birds). Please keep to the tracks on the island, for a careless foot can collapse a burrow and bury a Mutton Bird or chick.
Dogs and cats are not permitted on the island and offenders will be prosecuted if caught.
Port Fairy's iconic, historic lighthouse is also on the island working daily to guide ships by safely eversince it was built in 1859. You can also still see the foundation remains of the lighthouse keepers house.
It takes up to one hour to walk around the island (2.95km) but just 20 minutes if you only want to do the 1.25km walk to the lighthouse.
